Structure

The College Advising Center offers centralized academic support with full-time professional advisors. A four-tiered approach to the delivery of your advising and academic support begins in your first year and continues throughout your academic career.

1. Freshmen are assigned to an academic adviser who serves as their primary adviser for the freshman year or until they declare a major.

2. Freshmen are also paired during their first year with a faculty mentor who can be a further valuable resource.

3. The Peer Alliance and Support (PALS) program pairs freshmen with upperclass students to assist with the transition process during the first year.

4. Students with a declared major are also advised through their major academic department, but they should always seek further assistance through the Advising Center.

Services

In addition to providing advice on educational policies and procedures, study abroad, joint degree programs, and other academic matters, the Advising Center offers special programs designed to help you succeed: free tutoring and study skills workshops through the College Learning Center, activities for international students, the Academic Enhancement Program, which assists students in the process of choosing a major, the Academic Achievement Program, Asian Pacific American Student Support (APASS), and a special adviser who assures that seniors have met all requirements and are ready to graduate. The College Preprofessional Advising Center works closely with pre-health, pre-law, and pre-business students at each stage of the process of preparing for professional school education and the professions, starting as early as freshman year. These services exist to make life at the College a more personal and enriching experience.

Structure

A full-time professional advisement staff provides information about registration and transfer at Registration Information Sessions, which are offered frequently throughout each semester. As a LS student, a faculty advisor is assigned to you at the beginning of freshman year; ordinarily the same advisor will provide academic advisement to the student for the two years that he or she spends in LS.

Services

Advising at LS is attuned particularly to helping students in its two-year program make a smooth transition to the college environment, gain a solid foundation in the liberal arts, and transfer successfully after their sophomore year to the NYU school into which they were admitted as freshmen. Advisors guide students in developing effective learning skills, exploring options available in other NYU colleges, choosing electives, registering for classes, monitoring progress, and preparing for an eventual choice of academic concentration that aligns with their academic and professional goals.

Structure

At the start of your enrollment as a McGhee student, you will meet with a dedicated and knowledgeable full-time professional advisor. Once you have solidified your choice of major and/or area of concentration and have had the opportunity to fully acclimate to NYU, you will then work with a faculty advisor/mentor in your area of study. The process is designed to help McGhee students adjust to academic life at NYU, create an individualized plan for success, and take advantage of the full range of resources that NYU and McGhee offer adult students.

Services

McGhee's academic advising structure is geared to the very specific needs of adult learners who - whether attending college for the first time or returning to college after an absence - must balance the responsibilities of work and family along with handling their academic requirements. In addition to one-on-one advisement, services include such things as classes to strengthen basic academic skills; tutoring in specific subject areas; IT support to help students stay connected and informed; and scholarship resource assistance.

Structure

SSW students receive an individual academic advisement session with the Undergraduate Program Director that precedes registration each semester. This is a time for you to discuss your long-term academic plans as well as specific course selections for that semester. These individual meetings with the Undergraduate Director also involve a review of your academic standing and where you need to obtain required clearance to enroll in classes for the upcoming term.

Services

Academic advisement in the School of Social Work provides guidance and support for new freshmen, transfers, and continuing students. The School’s website provides a host of online resources, including a comprehensive student handbook, as complements to in-person advisement.

Advisement in the Steinhardt School of Education is organized within its departments and programs.

Students are assigned an academic advisor in their program or department during orientation who ideally remains their advisor throughout their study at NYU. The process is designed to provide a consistent source of academic information and guidance in a setting that is familiar and comfortable. Services

Advisors help you understand and fulfill degree requirements, plan course selection, and discuss progress towards your degree. They also make referrals to student service offices as recommended by a particular issue, problem, or concern. Students meet with their advisors in advance of each semester's registration period to plan selection of courses, which the advisor must approve, and to monitor progress towards their degree. Students and advisors use a worksheet as a reminder of expectations and issues to be discussed.

The Office of Academic Advising is a centralized system with professional advisors, who work in a team structure to best serve the needs of each respective class.

Services

Academic advisement at Stern reflects the School's commitment to educate its students through a combination of in-classroom learning and co-curricular experiences. The Stern Office of Academic Advising provides comprehensive guidance to help students design a well-rounded academic program to meet that goal. Advisors work collaboratively with students to develop an individualized academic plan appropriate to each stage of your undergraduate career. The office also coordinates its own series of programs, which complement students’ other academic activities.

Advisors are available for 30-minute appointments Monday through Thursday. Students can schedule appointments 24/7 by logging on to: http://advisortrac.stern.nyu.edu. Common reasons to meet with an advisor include (but are not limited to):

Non-Stern Students

Structure

Tisch students receive academic advisement primarily through the department in their major field of study. Students in all Tisch departments have access to faculty advisors. In addition, you can seek guidance from the department administrator in each program responsible for advisement and registration as well as from staff in the Tisch Office of Student Affairs.

Services

Faculty advisors are available to meet with students on a regular basis. The Tisch Office of Student Affairs and Services handles all administrative matters related to students' registration and progress toward their degree, including credits, course selection, double majors/minors, general education requirements, and any advisement-related question or problem that has not been resolved at the departmental level. Students can download a number of related forms and documents including the Tisch Policies and Procedures Handbook that describes school-wide policies, regulations, and deadlines.
