Jewish Learning Fellowship - Spring 2009

Who isn't interested in learning more about their Jewish identities, meeting other students, recent alums and grads, getting FREE dinner every week....AND making $500? Sounds too good to be true but the Jewish Learning Fellowship offers students $500 as a stipend for participation.

The fellowship has 4 different tracks to choose from:
1) Introduction to Judaism
2) Judaism & Life Undergrads
3) Judaism & Life Grads
4) Judaism & Sexual Ethics
Come once a week for 10 weeks throughout the Spring Semester for 2.5 hours at a time (1 hour of group learning with a Rabbi, 30 minutes of dinner and some socializing, and an hour with 5 other students and your very own educator who can teach and discuss ANYTHING about Judaism that you've ever wanted to know!). Questions? Email Julia Weigensberg. For more information on the schedule and curriculum, click here.

Edgar Bronfman and Irshad Manji at the Great Hall!

Hope, Not Fear:

A Conversation with Irshad Manji and Edgar M. Bronfman

Two visionary leaders, one Muslim and the other Jewish, will meet for a provocative discussion about moral courage on Wednesday, October 29, 6:30-8:00 p.m., at The Great Hall at Cooper Union, 7 East 7th Street, New York, NY. [Subways: #6 to Astor, N and R to 8th Street and Broadway].

The discussion will feature Edgar M. Bronfman, author of the new book ?Hope, Not Fear: A Path to Jewish Renaissance? and the Chairman of Hillel?s International Board of Governors, and Irshad Manji, author of the international best-seller ?The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim?s Call for Reform in Her Faith? and Director of the Moral Courage Project, based at New York University?s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.

In his book, Bronfman challenges North American Jews to transcend victimhood, welcome intermarriage, and embrace the creativity of outsiders. His passionate appeal for openness applies to religious, cultural, and ethnic groups everywhere. President of the World Jewish Congress for twenty-six years and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Bill Clinton in 1999, Bronfman was crucial in securing the safe emigration rights of Soviet Jewry and in fighting for the compensation of Holocaust survivors and their heirs. Manji, in her book, calls on fellow Muslims to embrace human rights and proposes ideas for a fresh U.S. foreign policy that can empower Muslim reformers. Named by the American Society for Muslim Advancement as a ?Muslim leader of tomorrow,? she also created the Emmy-nominated PBS film ?Faith Without Fear,? which follows her world journey to reconcile Islam and freedom. A winner of Oprah Winfrey?s first annual Chutzpah award for ?audacity, boldness and conviction,? Manji teaches moral courage at NYU Wagner.

This event is presented by the Moral Courage Project and co-sponsored by The Bronfman Center Selma Ruben Distinguished Lecturer Series and the Research Center for Leadership in Action, both at New York University. Admission is free. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The discussion begins at 7:00 p.m. Book signings begin at 8:00 p.m. To RSVP, visit http://wagner.nyu.edu/events/leadership-10-29-2008.

A PIECE OFFERING GALLERY OPENING

The Bronfman Center Gallery is re-opened for the year with A Piece Offering opening last Thursday, September 18th. The show exhibits the work of the 2008 Bronfman Jewish Student Artist Fellows, whose work includes photography, video installation, multimedia, poetry, dance, performance art, comics, and woodcut prints.
The opening was a great success and well attended! There was a lovely reception of wine and cheese, jazz music by Steinhardt guitarist Dimitry Ekshtut, and a chance for attendees to meet and mingle with the student artists. Special thanks to gallery intern Erica Dobin, who made the night possible with her vast gallery knowledge and suave wine-pouring skillsmanship!
The Gallery opening was also pleased and proud to have the support of the Bronfman Center Alumni, who were well-represented at Thursday?s reception. As alum Jill Goldstein left for the evening, she stopped to leave a message in the guest comment book outside of the Gallery, describing the show as ?so well put together, really draws you in physically and emotionally!?
A Piece Offering will run through November 6, 2008, with gallery hours Mon-Thurs 8am-10pm, Friday 8am-4pm, and Sunday 9am-9pm. The gallery is closed on Saturdays.
