Alfred Bloom, President of Swarthmore, to Lead NYU Abu Dhabi
On September 29, 2008, NYU announced the appointment of Alfred H. Bloom, the highly respected president of Swarthmore College, as Vice Chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi. While completing his term as Swarthmore’s president, he will serve as a consultant; he will assume full-time leadership of NYU Abu Dhabi in August 2009. Brain Imaging Study Shows How Mind Adjusts in Threatening and Safe Circumstances
Researchers at New York University and Princeton University have mapped out how the brain responds to situations that once generated fear, but are subsequently seen as safe or non-threatening. The research, which appears in the Journal of Neuroscience, may enhance our understanding of how to treat clinical fear disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Read more »

Supreme Court of the United States Grants Cert in Case in which Law School’s Center on the Administration of Criminal Law Filed First Amicus Brief
The Supreme Court of the United States granted certiorari in a case in which New York University School of Law’s Center on the Administration of Criminal Law filed its first amicus curiae brief. The Court will review a lower court’s ruling in U.S. v. Abuelhawa, in which petitioner Salman Khade Abuelhawa was convicted under a federal statute for using his cell phone to purchase drugs for personal use, conduct the statute was not intended to reach. NYU Remains Leader in Attracting International Students, Sending Students to Study Abroad, New Report Finds
New York University remains one of the top American universities in both attracting international students and in sending students to study abroad, according to a new report by the Institute of International Education (IIE). The report, “Open Doors 2008,” underscores the transformation of NYU as a “Global Network University”- it maintains study abroad sites on five continents that are fully integrated with each other and are connected to NYU in New York. NYU Biologist Bonneau Named Among 20 “Visionary” Scientists Under 40 by Discover Magazine
New York University Biologist Richard Bonneau has been named one of 20 “visionary” scientists under the age of 40 by Discover magazine. Bonneau, 33, is an assistant professor who holds appointments at NYU’s Center for Genomics and Systems Biology and the university’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.
